It was the matchup I'm sure the committee had in mind when they set up the brackets. How often does it actually happen that you get the number one ranked team vs the number two ranked team in the country? To me, Illinois and North Carolina were the only true number one seeds in the 2005 Final Four tournament. The last two seeds could have gone to five or six schools as they were all legit contenders, but none greater than the other. With all of the crazy upsets and come backs, this game was quite the championship game. North Carolina jumped to a 15 point lead early in the second half. Illinios fought back to tie the game on several occasions, but for some reason when they had the game in reach, only down by two in the last few minutes, they stuck with their outside 3-poiint shot. Which at this time, what got them back into the game, had now gone cold. Advantage NC.

I wont go into much detail about the game as I'm sure either watched the game and saw it yourself already or if you do want to read something, there are many sites out there with their take of todays championship game. CBS Sportsline or ESPN

Your top ten winners for 2005 Office Pool are as follows:
01. Kyle Kalbus
02. Tedd Aurelius
03. Justin Mangold
04. Michael Dean
05. WD44706
06. Charles Ellis
07. Charles
08. Raymond Cagnon
09. Ryan Delehant
10. Mike Dixon

Thank you to everyone who played in this years tournament. It was good to see the number of people entering the office pool go in a positive direction this time around.

See ya in 2006!

This was one hell of a weekend for College basketball games. Three ended in overtime, one was a double OT game. How on earth did Louisville, Illinois, and Kentucky all come back to tie the game when they looked like they were in the hands of defeat?

West Virginia, 18-27, [66%] on 3-pointers! That's insane shooting!! Many of them WAAAYYY outside the arch! There is no way they should be making that many 3-pointers, the percentage just are not there to back it up. None the less, a few more turnovers for WV, plus getting the ball stolen a few more times and trips to the line for the Cards was just enough to edge the Mountaineers for the trip to the Final Four.

In the Illinois vs Arizona game. You have the number one ranked team in the country, number one ranked in the tournament down by 15 points with four minutes to play. You have an all out collapse and go without a field goal in the final six minutes of play. Bam! Score one for the Big Ten Conference [ranked number 6 for conferences by the RPI ratings].

Then we have the double overtime, Kentucky vs Michigan State game. I've looked at the brackets, only a handfull of them have Michigan State going beyond the first weekends games and into the Sweet Sixteen. If you honestly picked them to advance further than the sweet 16, bravo for you, you are more daring than I am. But what a finish to that game. Three 3-point attempts in the final 7 seconds of play by Kentucky to tie the game. Or was it? That 5 minute delay looking at the replay....too close to tell. The first over time ended with Kentucky having the ball for the entire last minute, unable to score, then unable to get a shot off before the buzzer....second overtime the Spartans earn another Final Four victory for the Big Ten....does this mean that the Big Ten is back?

I must give a mention to the Wisconsin Badgers [another Big Ten Team] vs North Carolina. It was close at times, 44-44 at half, but NC was too much for the Badgers.

Another early exit for a higher seeded team. This time the #2 ranked UConn Huskies, 2004 defending champs, lost by three points to #10 seed, NC State. Was an impressive team effort for the Wolfpack. Mainly getting the win by their 3-point shooting. They went 10 of 19 or 52%. UConn just couldn't keep any momentum going and bow out gracefully because of it.

#4 Louisville looked strong in their win over #5 Georgia Tech whom was highly favored to go far into the tournament, not gonna happen. Another team expected to go far into the tourney but didn't was #4 Florida getting knocked out by #5 Villanova.

The two number one seeds Duke, North Carolina and #2 Oklahoma State easily took care of their opponents Mississippi State, Iowa State, and Southern Illinois, respectively.

While the Big Ten rolls on getting two more teams into the Sweet Sixteen, three total. As #5 Michigan State defeated #13 Vermont and #6 Wisconsin in an ugly win took out #14 Bucknell.

Pittsnogle from West Virginia is a great name. Made me giggle every time the game announcers said it. Wow what a game between #2 Wake Forest and #7 West Virginia. Double overtime for this gem of a game. At the end of each game ending period, it was Wake making a clutch 3 pointer to tie. Six, count em, six players fouled out in the game. It was a game to watch and hopefully you did.

That game was from the same stadium that saw the team with the longest winning streak in the tournament, #3 Gonzaga, at 13-0, lose one at the end of the game to Bobby Knight's team, #6 Texas Tech. It wasn't pretty, but they put the game away with 2 free throws from Ronald Ross with less than 10 seconds remaining. I've seen plenty of games coached by Bobby Knight when he was with Indiana playing against the Minnesota Gophers. He had his team ready to play and a well deserved victory for Coach Knight.

Two days ago they get their first win every in the NCAA tournament. This afternoon, they pulled off another upset when #12 Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers defeated #4 Boston College. BC was wanted a higher seed from what I've read, but if you can't beat the #12 team, not much to bitch about. The Panthers victory, their 10th in a row and now the longest win streak for any team in the tournament have also won 19 out of their last 20 games. They will now go on to face the #1 ranked team overall, Illinois who crushed Nevada in their game. However Illinois also had the 102nd easiest schedule this year. It could be a very interesting game next Thursday and I can't for the game to start already.

In another big upset of the day. We saw the #6 Utes of Utah get a nine point victory over #3 Oklahoma. Andrew Bogut, who was 3 assists away from a triple double was a huge key in today's victory. Was slow to score at the beginning of the game and had all seven of his assists in the second half. There was four or five other potential assists that were missed shots, otherwise it should have been a triple double for Bogut.

The remaining games were somewhat easy for the higher ranked seeds. #3 ranked Arizona easily defeated #11 UAB. #1 ranked Washington also knocked off #8 Pacific. It was probably the most predicted upset in the brackets today. Guess not to much respect for the Huskies as there are very few expecting them to win it all. The last game to mention, despite the 9 point victory for #2 ranked Kentucky, it was not an easy win over #7 Cincinnati. It was another nail biter until the last minute of play. The score was back and forth and the lead changed quite a few times throughout. The game kept me on the edge of my seat rooting for the upset, yet needed Kentucky to win for my bracket. That's what makes this tournament so great.

Eight more games tomorrow and if they are as good as today's games, it would be a shame if your not able to watch them.

Now I remember why they call it March Madness. Damn you Kansas Jayhawks! How could you do this to me? The highest rated RPI team this year and you lose in the first round against 14th ranked, Bucknell. Yes it's true, I did pick Kansas Jayhawks for my championship team this year. Their loss completely killed my chances of winning. I had only one wrong selection yesterday and sitting good. Friday I ended up with 5 incorrect picks, plus my number one team. Hats off to the six people out of 447 people who correctly pick Bucknell to defeat Kansas.

Although, not to be out done, 13th ranked Vermont, pulls off the other major upset of the evening handing the Orangemen of Syracuse a first round loss. The Catamounts hit many clutch shots at the end of the game to knock off the heavily selected Stracuse team. Now for me this was good as I correctly picked the Vermont victory. It does me little good now, having Kansas bow out so early.

The tournament is in full swing finally. Round one is in the books and hopefully you are sitting better than I am after the first round of games. This is one of the best sports four-day weekends of the year. Nothing but college basketball from lunchtime to almost bedtime. You don't have to be a sports nut to get into these games. I know not many people in the pool actually follow more than a dozen teams, let alone more than 1 team. However when you have your pick sheet in, how can you not root for the team you picked to win the game? Or at the very least, one that will do alot of damage for your opponents picks leaving you with a way to jump back into the tournament. For me, Illinois would have to lose in the next round for me to save face this year. I really don't see that happening, but I also didn't see the Jayhawks quick tournament exit.

So who is the best after one round of games in this tournament? Double D of Akrin, Ohio, correctly picked 30 of 32 games, giving him 60 points. He missed on LSU and of course the Kansas game!

Enjoy your evening and the rest of the games this weekend.

Just a few more hours and the selection committee will have made their 65 teams for the 2005 Final Four tournament. I will update the printable bracket and get the remainder of the site online to enter picks within a few hours.

My office pool which has been on line since 1997 is still free after all these years and there still are no prizes for the winner, just bragging rights.

If you have any questions or want me to add your website to my list of office pools, drop me an email. Wouldn't ya know it, I lost my hard drive data since the last tournament and lost everyone's emails who played last year, and the year before, ugh! So you wont be getting an email to play in this years pool.
